Tank Range - Austria
This huge multi-purpose range complex was equipped in 2004 and is a part of the largest Austrian army training camp. The range complex includes a tank battle training range to train Leopard 2A4 (Main gun: 120 mm) and Pandur II (Main gun: 90mm) and a deployable infantry target field with 20 stationary target mechanisms. Most of the equipment installed here has been delivered by TTS. In various steps TTS has continuously extended this training facility. The tank range is powered by hardwire and controlled by radio. 85 heavy stationary armor lifters are placed in concrete target pits, protected by armored steel plates. The target lifters are equipped with a battery which is continuously trickle-charged. By doing so, the range can be operated even if main power fails. Five fast moving armor targets allow a target presentation of large tank flank targets in a maximum size of 3 by 7 meters with speeds of up to 60 kph, providing realistic velocities and behaviour of vehicles in battle operation. This qualifies TTS equipment to train tank crews and anti armor gunners on the weapon guidance systems of armoured vehicles as well as RPGs or TOWs. The combination of armor and infantry targets supports the realistic training of armoured personnel carriers (e.g. Pandur II) and dismounted infantry. Thermal target devices create the thermal signature of vehicles.
These targets are implemented to train soldiers in target identification and elimination by thermal imaging equipment. The whole range can be controlled from the tower or from a vehicle deployed laptop computer allowing the instructor to follow the training troops through the whole battle range.
